The roles and responsibilities of the ELL teachers and specialists within the school are numerous and varied. Overall the goal is simple: to offer support and encouragement to our students, and to provide them with a safe and inclusive environment in which to explore their developing language skills.
What we do:
Welcome new students and their families into the school community.
Assess students’ language abilities and ensure placement in the appropriate level.
Create a safe and productive learning environment for all learners to grow.
Assist students in creating personal language learning goals.
Show respect for all cultures and first languages.
Teach language that is practical for use inside and outside of the classroom to build academic language and communication skills.
Incorporate instructional strategies for all learning levels and styles.
Include a variety of activities that include interactive games, technology, etc.
Encourage students to engage in cooperative learning.
Allow students to share their own opinions and experiences.
Provide continual assessment for advancement to higher levels of ELL instruction and support.
Celebrate big and small successes.
Collaborate with other teachers and support staff to encourage student growth in all subject areas outside the ELL classroom.
